Cholo Writing: Latino Gang Graffiti in Los Angeles

Cholo writing, a Mexican American LA phenomenom, is the oldest form of name graffiti in the 20th century. It has its own aesthetic, evident long before the explosion of tags and pieces in the early 1970s. These wall-writings are territorial signs which main function is to define the limits of a gang s influence area. It s a graffiti made by the neighborhood for the neighborhood.

This book focuses on cholo writing from an aesthetic point of view. It contains two unique collections of photographs by Howard Gribble & François Chastanet. In the 1970 s Gribble photographed examples of Latino gang graffiti over a wide geographic area in order to encompass a larger variety of styles and variations. In 2008, more than 30 years later, Chastanet went to the same neighborhoods to photograph the inscriptions of today. Foreword by Chaz Bojórquez, LA-based artist.
